What can I do about dandruff in my beard?

Home / Beard and Moustache

Flakes in the beard are called beardruff. These do not only occur in the hair on your head, but can also appear in your beard. Because this gives a rather unkempt impression, we naturally want to avoid this. Find out all about the causes here and follow our tips directly from barber Julien against flakes in the beard.

  • What causes beard dandruff? How do they develop?

Flakes in the beard are actually dead skin cells that, due to dehydration of the skin under your beard, come loose from the skin and nestle between your beard hairs as white flakes and cause itching . In addition, dry skin is also sensitive to skin irritations . This makes you tend to scratch your beard, which in turn causes more misery. And as if this is not annoying enough, they also give an unkempt appearance, not only in your beard but also on your shoulders and chest, and that is of course not the intention. We were going for that irresistible attraction, weren't we? Now you can look as well-groomed as you want, dressed in a suit, stylish or tough, wear the most beautiful accessories, have a cool haircut, you won't go outside with flakes in your beard!

The skin under the beard can dry out due to various causes:

    • not caring for your beard or not caring for it enough
    • using the wrong, overly aggressive products for the care of your beard
    • washing your beard too often
    • winter cold

The main cause of flakes in the beard is a dried out underlying skin. This can easily be prevented by applying good beard care. Hydration is the most important thing.

  • What can I do about dandruff in my beard?

Growing and maintaining a beautiful beard requires some work. If you just let everything take its course, and don't take proper care of your beard, or use the first products you find in the bathroom, sooner or later those annoying white beard flakes will appear. No or too little or not the right care means that too little nutrition and moisture is supplied, with all the consequences that entails. Even though the formation of dead skin cells can differ from person to person, because this is genetically determined, fortunately you can do a lot yourself to prevent beard dandruff. The most important thing is to hydrate and nourish the underlying skin well. You can do this by applying good beard care . However, don't expect to get rid of those annoying flakes by applying our tips and advice once. And don't expect that once you have finally managed to grow a beautiful, full beard, that no more care is necessary. On the contrary, with a full beard, the skin is more difficult to reach for nutrients and moisture, which can also make the skin dry quickly. Persevere and make our advice part of your daily morning ritual. Success guaranteed. Read our tips and advice here:

  • 1 - Wash your beard, but not too often, and with the right products

To start with, it is important that you wash your beard regularly, but not too often and especially with a product that is intended for that purpose. Washing too often will actually cause dehydration, which is exactly what we want to avoid. Two to three times a week is certainly sufficient. Definitely do not wash your beard every day. Even if you use a regular shampoo, dehydration will occur. So don't do it! Instead, use a shampoo or soap that is specially made for cleaning your beard. After all, the skin under your beard is not the same as your scalp. And the hairs of your beard are also not the same as the hairs on your head. A good beard shampoo and beard soap contain special ingredients that care for, nourish and soften the skin, and therefore prevent dehydration. And if there are any flakes that have ended up in your beard, they will now be washed out.

We at Julien Deluxe are fans of these quality products, which we use daily in our barbershop:

  • BONUS TIP 1: AVOID SHOWERS THAT ARE TOO HOT

Hot showers dry out your skin and this is exactly what we want to avoid. If the dandruff keeps coming back, you can try lowering the temperature of the water a bit so that your beard is washed with lukewarm water.

  • BONUS TIP 2: PAT BEARD DRY, DO NOT RUB

Rubbing too hard will cause irritation and knots. Also, the beard should not be completely dry, but towel dry, for the next steps.

  • 2 - Brush your beard thoroughly every day

By brushing your beard thoroughly with a beard brush , you will brush the flakes out of your beard. In addition, you will also exfoliate the underlying skin, which removes the dead skin cells before they can come loose and end up in your beard. Your skin will now also be better able to absorb the nutrients in the care products and thus ensure better hydration. You should definitely not skip this step if you suffer from flakes in your beard.

At Julien Deluxe we are fans of the Clochard Deluxe beard brush:

  • 3 - Moisturize beard after washing

Especially if you suffer from dandruff, it is advisable to use a beard conditioner after washing, i.e. not every day, that nourishes the skin and hair and provides them with sufficient moisture.

At Julien Deluxe we are fans of the leave in conditioner from Pirates of the Barbertime:

  • 4 - Nourish and hydrate your beard daily with a beard oil

Using beard oil will ensure that the skin under your beard hairs is hydrated, which can prevent dehydration and therefore itching , irritation and flaking. Using beard oil is the most important and indispensable step in caring for your beard. Make sure that you apply the beard oil to a towel-dry beard. If the beard is still too wet, the beard oil will not be absorbed properly. Use a beard brush or a beard comb to distribute the oil evenly over the entire beard.
