How do I make the perfect Gin & Tonic?
Many chase the dream of a perfect Gin & Tonic and actually it is very simple.
There are four principles:
1 - First you need ice, lots of ice. First fill the glass with ice and stir it around the inside of the glass so that the glass is chilled. Pour away the melted water before adding the gin and tonic. The more ice you use, the slower it will melt.
2 - Next, you need to know your gin to know which tonic to use. What botanicals were used to make the gin? This will help you match the gin with the perfect tonic. Use flavors that complement each other. If you have a citrus styled gin, choose a citrus based tonic. Do you like other combinations better? Just experiment and do it!
3 - As for the quantities, go for a 1:3 ratio. So use 50ml gin to 150ml tonic. That way you have the ideal ratio to let the finesse of the gin come into its own.
4 - For the garnish, choose fruit or herbs that complement the botanicals of the gin. Don't overdo it with garnishes. Use a maximum of two. and don't let them dominate. That way, they give an extra dimension to the gin & tonic and accentuate the flavors and aromas.
Once you master these four principles, you can confidently make the perfect Gin & Tonic!
