Holes in socks are very annoying for several reasons:
-
Discomfort : Holes can cause irritation to your toes or heels because the sock no longer fits properly. This can cause chafing and discomfort when walking or standing.
- Aesthetically unappealing : Socks with holes look unkempt, especially if they are visible when you take off your shoes in company.
- Cold : A hole in a sock can cause your feet to get cold more quickly, especially in the winter months.
- Bad impression : Whether you're at home or visiting someone, holes in your socks can leave a sloppy impression.
- Short lifespan : Holes in socks mean they need to be replaced sooner, which costs more in the long run.

Avoiding holes not only provides more comfort and a neat appearance, but also extends the life of your socks. Luckily, at Julien Deluxe we have 10 tips to avoid those annoying holes.
1. Prevent holes = Wear seamless socks with a reinforced toe and heel piece
-
These reinforcements are there for a reason. The toes and heel are where the socks are most vulnerable and subject to wear. This means that they are also most susceptible to holes in those places. Hence the reinforced parts. As for seamless socks , these are knitted in one piece using special knitting techniques so that there is no seam. But by seamless socks we also mean that the seam is made by hand or with special machines in such a way that the seam is very thin and flat, so that you hardly feel it. We also call this the "Flat Toe Seam". Moreover, this seam is not between the toes, but at the beginning of the toes. This thin, flat seam hardly causes any irritation and makes the chance of holes in your socks a lot smaller.

2. Prevent holes = Buy the right size socks
-
The fit is very important. If you wear socks that are just a little too small, there will be a lot of tension on the toe and heel area and over time there will be wear and a hole will appear. So don't buy your socks on the tight side, but avoid holes by buying them in the right size so that they don't become too tight.
-
3. Prevent holes = Wear the right size shoes
-
If you wear shoes that are too small, there is a lot of pressure on your feet and therefore also on your socks. If you wear shoes that are too big, your feet will slide in the shoes, causing friction and even blisters on your feet. Both situations have a negative effect on the lifespan and therefore ensure that they wear out faster. And in worn-out models you simply get holes faster, worn spots will very easily become holes. That is why it is important to wear the right size of shoes. Then you will not have these problems and no holes will develop.
-
4. Prevent holes = Don't pull your socks up too tight
-
Make sure that the heel piece is really on your heel and not beyond the heel. This heel piece is reinforced to prevent wear and holes. If you pull the socks up too much, the heel piece will go beyond the heel and you have a greater chance of a hole at the height of your heel.
-
5. Prevent holes = Give your feet the care they deserve
-
If you suffer from calluses and cracks on your feet, it is high time for action. Both calluses and cracks are rough and can damage your socks and cause holes. Either get to work yourself with a pumice stone or book an appointment with the pedicure. Relax. Cracks can be caused by dry, rough feet. Apply a foot cream regularly or give them a foot bath. In short, give them the care they deserve.
-
6. Prevent holes = Give your toenails the attention they deserve
-
Too long toenails cause extra pressure on the socks, which can cause holes. And sharp nails are absolutely out of the question. It goes without saying that these can also cause holes. Be kind to your socks and keep your nails short! If you go to the pedicure for the calluses on your feet, your nails will also be cut and cared for.
-
7. Prevent holes = Don't wear your socks without shoes on your feet
-
If you want to walk around without shoes, walk barefoot but not in your socks. Otherwise they will lack the protection of the shoes and will wear out faster and show holes. A lot will of course depend on the surface you walk on, but in any case it is not a good idea for the lifespan of your socks to walk around without shoes.
-
8. Prevent holes = Put your socks in a washing net before throwing them in the washing machine
-
This way, they are optimally protected during washing against holes and other damage from zippers and hooks of all kinds from other garments, and against loss, another irritation!
-
9. Prevent holes = Buy socks in the right materials
-
Buy socks that contain a percentage of polyester or polyamide (nylon). These materials provide strength and elasticity, which helps maintain the fit. Bamboo and Egyptian cotton are also distinguished by their strength. Read our blog “What is Egyptian cotton?” .

Step-by-step plan: How to patch holes in socks with needle and thread
With this simple step-by-step plan you can repair holes in your socks and extend their lifespan. This is not only sustainable, but also saves money. Follow the steps below: -
Supplies
• A darning needle (or a blunt needle with a large eye)
• Darning thread or strong sewing thread (preferably in a color that matches the sock)
• A stop mushroom, ball, or similar tool such as a tennis ball
• A pair of scissors -
Step 1: Preparation
1. Wash and dry the sock before you start. This ensures that the material is clean and easier to work with.
2. Place the sock over the stopper mushroom or tool (e.g. tennis ball). This will help to tighten the hole and make repairing easier.
3. Choose the right yarn: use a color that matches the sock or a contrasting color for a nice effect. -
Step 2: Prepare the hole
1. Carefully trim away any loose threads or fraying around the hole. This will prevent further damage and ensure a neat finish.
2. Check that the edges are sturdy enough to work on. If they are very thin, make a few small stitches to reinforce the edges. -
Step 3: Sewing the first stitches
1. Thread the needle with the darning thread and tie a secure knot at the end.
2. Start just outside the edge of the hole. Working from left to right, make straight stitches across the hole, as if you were stretching threads. This will be the base layer.
3. Make sure your stitches go a little past the edges of the hole so it is secure. If you sew too close to the edge, the stitches will come undone and the hole will continue to fray. -
Step 4: Weaving
1. Once you have applied the base layer, begin making cross stitches over the first layer. This creates a woven pattern that fills the hole completely.
2. Weave the yarn through the vertical stitches, going alternately over and under the yarns, like a basket.
3. Do not pull the thread too tight, but make sure it is secure. -
Step 5: Finishing
1. Make a few extra stitches at the edges to reinforce the repair.
2. Tie the thread securely to the inside of the sock and cut off any excess thread.
3. Check the sock by stretching it slightly. The repair should feel firm and flat. -
Step 6: Test and use
1. Put on the sock and walk around gently with it to test whether the repair is comfortable.
2. Wash the sock as usual and enjoy your 'new' sock!
With this method you can give your favorite socks a second life! Have you ever tried to darn socks?
